Taxiphyllum sp. 'Spiky Moss' , also known as spiky moss, is a spectacular aquarium moss with a distinctive appearance. With its dense, pine-like branches, it creates a natural yet structured decor. Offered here in in vitro culture by Tropica , it is 100% free of algae, snails, or parasites. It attaches easily to aquarium roots , rocks , or decorations, and grows between 5 and 10 cm depending on conditions. Thanks to its spreading habit and deep green hue, it can be used to create carpets, walls, or even miniature trees. Ideal for aquascaping, it adapts to all styles.

Native to Asia, Spiky Moss is a lush, medium-growing moss that is highly prized in the aquascaping world. It is distinguished by its long, branched, flattened shoots, reminiscent of small thorny branches. With its intense medium green color, it grows horizontally or upwards, creating elegant and dense volumes in the aquarium. Compared to the famous "Christmas Moss", it is larger, more robust, and just as decorative . It clings naturally to various supports, and can be used to create original compositions such as trees, plant walls, or very natural shaded areas.
Spiky Moss grows slowly, but quickly becomes spectacular in the right conditions. Moderate lighting is enough to maintain its dense form. It tolerates temperatures ranging from 12 to 30°C, but prefers cooler water around 24°C, where it grows more vigorously. The ideal pH is between 6.0 and 7.5, with moderate hardness (GH up to 15). It does not require CO2 to grow, but a small supplement can boost its density. Adding nutrients , especially an iron-based fertilizer, strengthens the health and color of the moss.

Taxiphyllum 'Spiky Moss' can be used in all sorts of compositions. It is easily attached using fishing line or special glue to wood, stones, or even plastic grids to create a carpet or a green wall. It is also perfect for covering a Matten filter and transforming it into an aesthetic element of the decor. It can also be used floating as a spawning site for fish, or as a hiding place for shrimp, which it delights with its microorganisms present on the fronds. And if you are a fan of aqua-terrariums or paludariums, it also thrives out of water, as long as it remains moist.
Available in in vitro culture, Spiky Moss arrives in a sterile dish. Simply rinse the nutrient gel under water, divide the plant into 5 to 10 portions , and attach them wherever you like. It can be planted anywhere: on vertical displays, sandy soils, or even directly in the stream. Regular pruning helps control its shape and stimulate growth. Be careful, however: this moss is sensitive to algae. Clean water, low nitrate levels, and a good filter cleaning will prevent any unwanted proliferation.
Today, Spiky Moss is a classic in planted tanks. It appeals as much for its graphic look as for its ease of adaptation. It is often sold under other names such as "Peacock Moss," but the differences are minimal. Its broad structure, its ability to quickly cover substrates, and its intense color make it perfect for natural settings. Whether in a nano-aquarium or an XXL tank, it brings a wild and controlled touch to your aquatic landscape. For even faster recovery, don't hesitate to accompany its introduction with beneficial bacteria .
