The Lobelia cardinalis in a mini pot is a charming aquatic plant that combines aesthetics, ease of maintenance and balanced growth . Grown in a small coconut fiber pot, it is directly ready to plant: no rock wool, no plastic, just a plant that adapts quickly to its new environment. In an aquarium, it develops bright light green foliage that contrasts perfectly with darker plants. Its vertical shape makes it an excellent background or border plant. It easily forms dense and decorative clumps , perfect for structuring the decor. And if your tank is open? It can even flower out of the water, revealing its famous scarlet red flowers.

Native to North America, Lobelia cardinalis grows naturally on banks, in wetlands, ditches or marshes. In aquariums, it has made a place for itself in Dutch tanks thanks to its thick, straight stems , covered with small, fleshy leaves of a very bright light green . This dense foliage makes it possible to create real “aquatic bushes” which contrast nicely with the fine textures of plants like Rotala.
This is a moderate-growing plant, ideal for the background. It quickly forms compact clumps that can range from 10 to 30 cm in height. In an open tank or paludarium, it can even emerge and flower: its large scarlet stems are a real aesthetic plus. Be careful, it likes light! Powerful lighting is essential to keep its leaves brightly colored and its growth balanced.

The Lobelia cardinalis is sold here in a mini pot, meaning it's ready to use. Simply remove the plant from the fiber pot, separate it into several strands if necessary, and plant directly into light soil. A nutritious substrate is recommended to boost its growth, but it can grow very well in an aquarium without a CO2 system , as long as it receives enough light.
With a temperature between 4 and 30°C, a pH of 6.5 to 7 and a GH around 1 to 12, it is a robust plant that adapts to the majority of containers. It appreciates a calm environment, without too much mixing, and benefits from a regular supply of nutrients to maintain green foliage and continuous growth.
As for maintenance, nothing complicated. You can cut the stems when they become too long or when the plant reaches the surface. This encourages the appearance of lateral shoots, perfect for densifying the bed or creating a pretty "vegetal street" in the background. White roots visible at the nodes are normal: they indicate a healthy plant ready to multiply.
Lobelia cardinalis can also be propagated simply by cutting a stem with a few roots and then replanting it in the substrate. This ability to grow from cuttings makes it ideal for those who want to structure their aquarium without waiting months. And as a bonus, if your tank is open, you might be lucky enough to see its beautiful red flowers appear during the summer.
Remember to maintain good water quality with a suitable filter , and to clean the filter regularly. This helps keep the leaves clean and prevents deposits from hindering their growth.
