Pogostemon deccanensis from Tropica is a unique aquarium plant reminiscent of a mini-conifer . Native to India, this stunning variety develops dense, upright stems topped with fine, whorled foliage. Its moderate growth allows for a compact, structured shape ideal for aquascaping. Perfect for background planting, it can also be used in a central group to create a unique focal point. It appreciates good light, rich soil, and CO2 to reveal its full beauty. Offered here in vitro culture, it guarantees an algae-, snail-, and pest-free introduction to your aquarium. A touch of luminous, sculpted greenery full of character for lovers of planted tanks.

Pogostemon deccanensis is a semi-aquatic plant native to the wetlands of South India. It is found in rice paddies, floodplains and along calm riverbanks. This species is distinguished by its slender stems adorned with fine whorled leaves, which evoke the appearance of a young conifer. This particular shape makes it a plant of choice for structuring the background of an aquarium , or for creating a plant bed in a corner of the tank. It can reach between 15 and 30 cm in height, with a very graphic appearance.
To get the best from this plant, it is important to provide it with a bright environment. Medium to bright lighting (0.5 W/L or more) will allow it to maintain a compact shape and beautiful colors. It tolerates a wide temperature range, between 15 and 30°C, and accepts a pH ranging from 5.5 to 8. Rich soil is highly recommended: whether you use a nutrient substrate or accompany it with root fertilizers, the plant will develop a strong root system. Adding a CO2 system not only accelerates growth, but also strengthens its density and overall appearance.

Pogostemon deccanensis grows at a moderate pace, which limits pruning needs while still allowing good shape control. Regular tip pruning is recommended to encourage the appearance of lateral shoots. This method allows the clump to fill out quickly and maintain a dense shape. Cut stems can be replanted: they root easily and continue to grow without any problems. Its upright structure creates a nice contrast with shorter or more rounded plants, and its light green hue highlights neighboring red plants.
Like all plants from Tropica 's "1-2-Grow!" program, Pogostemon deccanensis is grown in a lab, in a sterile nutrient gel. This ensures a plant free of algae, snails, and diseases . Before planting, simply remove the gel by rinsing the plant under water, then divide the root ball into 5 to 10 portions . Then, place the stems in the soil with pliers, spacing them slightly apart. Thanks to its vertical growth, it is perfect for adding volume without overwhelming the decor. You can also use it in combination with an aquarium root to create a natural and well-balanced scene.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced grower, Pogostemon deccanensis is a plant that immediately adds character to the tank. Its slender and regular shape allows it to fit into all types of compositions. It is ideal for providing a green background contrasting with creeping mosses or reddish plants. In well-maintained tanks, it can even present shades of green to reddish-brown , depending on the growing conditions. Remember to maintain good water quality, with regular filter cleaning , to avoid the accumulation of waste that hinders its growth. And to encourage recovery, a few bacteria at the introduction will not hurt.
