Porosity

A very important porosity, specially studied, with cavities, cracks and very many open pores, makes it possible to shelter a whole micro-fauna.
Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria find a favorable environment here.
Your entire decor is transformed into a living environment, reducing nitrites and nitrates.
Close-up photo: magnification of a section of a rock – part 5 cm long. We can see cracks, which go deep into the rock and which communicate with a whole network of cavities of 100 to 500 µ. These cavities are themselves lined with open pores of 20 to 100 µ. The purification bacteria which have a size of 1.2 to 1.5 µ can thus develop right to the heart of the material with a good supply of substances to be degraded.

In a reef tank, in addition to live rocks: colonization in a few months.
