Iodine and reef aquariums: a trace element with multiple functions
Iodine is often underestimated, and yet it plays an essential role in the overall balance of a reef aquarium . It acts on several levels: - at the cellular level by strengthening membranes, - in the metabolism of fish via the thyroid , - and especially in the coloration of corals (especially blue and purple) .
Too low a level can lead to soft tissue in Xenia or Zoanthus , increased susceptibility to bacterial infections or even moulting difficulties in shrimp and crabs. In invertebrates, it is also involved in the production of ecdysteroids, these famous moulting hormones.
Why iodine is depleted quickly and how to effectively replace it
In a well-stocked, brightly lit reef tank, iodine consumption is constant. Corals, macroalgae, microfauna... all absorb it. The problem is that iodine is also eliminated by the purification system : protein skimmer, activated carbon, UV, ozone... This makes it an unstable and volatile element . Without regular intake, a deficiency is almost inevitable.
The ATI Labs Iodine solution helps to precisely fill this gap. At a rate of 1 ml per 100 liters, the concentration is increased by 10 µg/l . Up to 20 µg/l per day is possible to restore a good level.
