The role of boron in reef aquariums

Boron is a trace element naturally present in seawater , generally around 4 to 5 mg/L. It plays a role in the balance of buffer systems and indirectly contributes to the stability of pH and KH in marine environments.

In a modern reef aquarium, water changes, biological export, and natural consumption can all affect boron concentration. Maintaining consistent boron levels helps preserve a stable ionic environment , especially in tanks with high coral growth.

We offer a full range of products to target the main elements of seawater following ICP analysis or manual testing.

A simple, direct and controlled formulation

The Zoanthus Lab – Boron solution is prepared from pharmaceutical grade disodium octaborate tetrahydrate ( Na2B8O13 · 4H2O ) , dissolved in purified water (RO/DI).

This highly soluble inorganic compound ensures perfect solution stability and accurate ICP readings. No chelators, dyes, or stabilizers are added to guarantee precise and measurable correction.

  • ✔ Stable inorganic solution
  • ✔ Pharmaceutical grade raw material
  • ✔ Compatible with Balling and modern reef methods
  • ✔ Consistent and reproducible ICP results

Concentration and dosage

This solution provides boron to correct a deficiency identified by an ICP analysis.

  • Concentration: 0.50 mg/mL of elemental boron.
  • Reference dosage: 100 mL per 100 L of water increases the boron concentration by 0.50 mg/L.
  • Recommended daily correction: do not exceed 20 mL per 100 L of water per day, i.e. an increase of 0.10 mg/L of boron.

Adjust the dose according to the actual water volume and the measured deficit. Spread large corrections over several days. Add in a well-mixed area and check the boron level before repeating the correction.

New concentration: check your dosage

Our boron solution has been reformulated from 10 mg/mL to 0.50 mg/mL . This reformulation reduces the concentration of boric acid in the bottle to comply with regulatory requirements for products intended for individual consumers. It also makes it easier to measure small corrections.

The new solution is 20 times less concentrated : to provide the same amount of boron, a volume 20 times greater is required. Thus, 1 mL of the old formula corresponds to 20 mL of the new one .

Always check the concentration indicated on your bottle. Older bottles retain their own dosage instructions. If you are using a dosing pump or calculator, adjust its settings to the concentration of the product being used.

Supplementation should always be based on a recent ICP analysis . In case of a significant deficiency, spreading the correction over several days helps avoid sudden changes in parameters and preserves the chemical stability of the tank.
