The role of chromium in reef aquariums

Chromium is a trace element present in trace amounts , generally expressed in µg/L. In reef aquariums, it is mainly monitored via ICP analyses to validate the overall consistency of the water chemistry, particularly in very “clean” systems (powerful skimming, advanced filtration, significant export, adsorbents).

As with all trace elements, the goal is not to apply the correcting agent "out of habit," but to correct only when a drift is confirmed . Gradual correction helps maintain a stable environment and avoid unnecessary variations.

A simple, direct and controlled formulation

The Zoanthus Lab – Chrome solution is prepared from chromium(III) potassium sulfate dodecahydrate (KCr( _SO4 ) ₂ · _12H2O ) , dissolved in purified water (RO/DI).

No chelating agent is added. This deliberate choice guarantees a stable inorganic solution and accurate ICP readings , free from interference caused by complexed forms. The raw material used is pharmaceutical grade , ensuring a clean, stable, and reproducible composition.

Concentration and dosage

The solution is formulated according to a precise protocol:

• Concentration: 0.1 mg/mL of chromium (elemental Cr)
• Recommended dosage: 1 mL per 100 L of water
• Effect: +1 µg/L of chromium
• Correction limit: do not increase chromium by more than 0.5 µg/L per day.

Supplementation should always be based on a recent ICP analysis . For trace elements, measured and gradual adjustments remain the best approach to maintaining a stable tank in the long term.

Usage and storage instructions

Add to a well-circulated area of the aquarium or to the sump. Shake well before use.

Store away from light, between 15 and 25 °C. Recommended shelf life: 12 months after manufacture.

• Not suitable for animal feed.
• In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.
