Iodine is naturally present in seawater at very low concentrations (approximately 60 µg/L). It plays a role in various biological processes, particularly in soft corals, gorgonians, sponges, crustaceans and macroalgae .
In a modern reef aquarium, iodine is quickly consumed by living organisms and removed by skimming. Its level can therefore gradually decrease, especially in tanks rich in soft corals or invertebrates.
