How to use the Colombo Nitrate Test?
General instructions
- Always make sure the test tube is thoroughly clean before use.
- Clean it thoroughly after each use so that it no longer contains any chemical residue that could distort subsequent results.
- Take the water sample as carefully as possible.
- Hold the vial upright when counting drops.
- Make sure there are no air bubbles in the drops.
Test procedure:
- Take a 10 ml water sample.
- Add 5 drops of NO3-1 test liquid and shake the test tube.
- Then add 5 drops of NO3-2 test liquid and shake the test tube.
- Then add 1 spoonful of nitrate powder (tube with a green cap).
- Shake the test tube for 20 sec.
- Wait 15 min and determine the NO3 value of the water using the colorimetric card supplied with the kit.
To judge the colour of the water sample after all the test liquids have been added, proceed as follows: Place the test tube on the colour card supplied with the kit and look simultaneously - from above - into the test tube and onto the card. Do not look under direct sunlight, but under indirect light. Compare the colour of the water sample with the colours on the card. The colour that matches best indicates the desired value. The colours of the sample and the card are not always identical, as the actual values are usually between two standardised values and therefore correspond to a mixture of two adjacent colours. In this case, it is necessary to judge approximately between which colours the sample actually lies.
