Cobalt plays a key role in zooxanthellae photosynthesis and the structure of coral tissue . When it is deficient, corals tend to lose their luster , their growth slows, and the tissue becomes thinner and more fragile. In fish, a deficiency can impact vitality, as cobalt is involved in the production of vitamin B12 , which is essential for the formation of red blood cells.

There are many causes of deficiency: a synthetic salt base that's too poor, aggressive filtration (with activated carbon or ozonation), or simply a lack of supplementation.
