Utricularia graminifolia from Tropica is a bit of a UFO among aquarium plants. With its miniature grass look and surprising carnivorous properties, this in vitro plant is a sensation in the foreground. It forms a pretty, dense, light green carpet , all in finesse, which dresses the aquarium floor with a stunning naturalness. In addition to its ultra decorative appearance, it feeds on microorganisms thanks to its small invisible skins , a real plus in well-balanced tanks. It loves light, thrives in soft water and prefers a dry planting to root well. With a good CO2 system and a little patience, it becomes the number one visual asset of your aquascape.
Thanks to this ingenious system, it adapts to nutrient-poor environments and thrives in neutral to slightly acidic soil. It can be used submerged for a classic look or semi-submerged to enjoy its unique purple bloom. The utricles gradually turn black after digesting the prey, which is completely natural.
To reach its full potential, this plant requires a well-controlled environment. Intense light is essential, as is soft, well-filtered, and slightly acidic water. The ideal? A temperature between 20 and 28°C, a pH around 6 to 6.8 , and a moderate GH. Although CO2 input is not mandatory, it significantly boosts growth and helps create that famous green carpet so sought after by aquascapers.
Proper lighting is key to its success. A 10-hour photoperiod per day will allow the leaves to maintain their beautiful apple-green hue. To avoid slow growth or deficiencies, a balanced nutrient intake is recommended, particularly iron and manganese. Be careful, however, not to overdose.
Utricularia graminifolia is sold in an in vitro pot, ready to use. To plant it properly, it is recommended to gently remove the plant, rinse it to remove the gel, then divide it into 5 to 10 small fragments. The most effective method? Plant it in an empty container, using the "dry start" method, with a moist nutrient substrate . Use pliers to push the sections into the soil without damaging them.
It can take 6 to 8 weeks to establish itself, so there's no need to rush. During this phase, avoid too much direct light , and wait until the clumps thicken before introducing fish or snails – they love its tender leaves. Once well established, it spreads quickly and forms a continuous, very attractive carpet.
It also adapts very well to semi-submerged cultivation on an aquarium root or a rock , and it is in these conditions that it flowers most easily. Floating or on a mineral support, it can do without planting while ensuring a very natural decorative effect. A must for open tanks or paludariums.
