Why is a skimmer essential in reefing?

In a marine tank, abundant food, fish waste, and coral secretions quickly release proteins, fatty acids, and other organic compounds . Without intervention, these residues transform into nitrates and phosphates, which cloud the water, suffocate corals, and promote algae. The skimmer then creates a dense curtain of microbubbles where the pollutants bind before being expelled into the bucket. The result: up to 80% of organic waste permanently leaves the aquarium, oxygenation increases, the surface oily film disappears, and the corals regain their vibrant colors.

How to choose the right skimmer for your marine aquarium?

Before clicking “Add to Cart,” three criteria make all the difference:

  • Positioning : bare tank, internal settling tank or technical tank?
Without decanter : a suspended or compact internal model frees up space.
Decant under aquarium : the most comfortable choice for the look and for maintenance.
Rear decanter : choose a narrow body like Deltec MCE to pass between the partitions.
  • Performance vs. volume : the simple rule: airflow = 2 × tank volume per hour .
    • Soft corals: a capacity equal to the actual volume is sufficient.
    • Low-demanding LPS or SPS: aim for 1.5 × the volume.
    • Strict SPS or large polluters: 2 × the volume, but no more so as not to starve the corals.
  • Fish population : A school of chromis does not have the same appetite as a 25 cm surgeonfish.
    • Low bioload: standard size skimmer.
    • Greedy fish: oversize by about 30% to buffer excess food.

Finally, the high-end options—silent needle rotor, high-flow venturi, diffuser plates—maximize water/air contact time and lower decibels: a luxury that comes at a price but is heard... or rather, is no longer heard!

Installation and maintenance of a marine skimmer

  • Installation : Install the device in the most stable area of the water level, adjust the column so that the foam reaches just at the base of the cup, then leave the new plastic to "break" for 48 hours.
  • Running-in : During the first week, the appliance may foam too much or too little; this is normal. Gently adjust the water level or the air intake, never both at the same time.
  • Weekly emptying : empty, rinse the bucket with hot water, wipe the lid; a clean bucket always results in more stable skimming.
  • Monthly cleaning : disassemble the pump and rotor, remove limescale, and check the seals. A well-cleaned pump regains its original flow rate and consumes less.

Questions / Réponses

How to choose a good skimmer?

To choose your skimmer, you will need to take into account where you want to install it, the air flow, as well as your type of population.

How to place an external skimmer?

Simply hang the skimmer on the edge of the aquarium. A pump is placed in your tank, returning water and air bubbles to the skimmer.

How to place an internal skimmer?

Simply place your skimmer inside the aquarium, securing it well at the height you want. For this type of skimmer, your aquarium must be open or have an opening, in order to place the pipe outlets and other accessories outside the water.

How do I choose the right flow rate for my skimmer?

The air flow is chosen according to the volume of water treated. The skimmer must have a flow rate of twice the volume of the aquarium treated in one hour (eg: to treat 200 liters of water, you will need a 400 l/h skimmer).

Do you need a skimmer for a nano-reef?

Below 60 L, very frequent water changes may be sufficient, but a small suspended skimmer makes vacations safer and limits algae. For a nano tank populated with small fish and soft corals, it provides real comfort.

Can you use a skimmer in a tank without a settling tank?

Yes! Hang-on models leave only the bucket protruding from the back of the tank. Only the pump is submerged in the aquarium, preserving the decor.

What settings for effective skimming?

Aim for a "dark" foam: neither too light (too much water), nor too black (not enough air). Adjust the air intake by a quarter turn, wait 24 hours, then refine if necessary.

When should the bucket be emptied?

As soon as it reaches ⅔ of its height or gives off a strong odor. Waiting too long encourages bacteria and destabilizes the setting.

Should the skimmer be turned off at night?

The skimmer is, in a way, the lungs of the aquarium; it must operate continuously: photosynthesis stops, oxygen levels drop, and pH levels plummet. The skimmer then maintains good gas exchange.

How much does a skimmer consume?

Modern models range from 5W to 30W, but the larger your tank, the more powerful pumps your skimmer will need. A clean rotor and an unobstructed venturi limit consumption.
