Contrary to what the description implies, these are absolutely not ordinary ceramic noodles, totally smooth and impermeable to water, unable to be colonized at depth by bacteria - in other words, vulgar mechanical filtration through meandering effects (changes in water direction and dead zones) - but rather excellent fried glass noodles. A closer look at the product photo suggests this possibility, and it was quickly confirmed on receipt by the classic capillarity test, when a noodle was placed in 1mm of colored liquid (wine, coffee, etc.)! You can see the liquid rise very quickly inside, just like in a sugar cube, whereas this never happens on ceramic noodles, which are impermeable to liquids! And unlike the more expensive glass-fried noodles, these are thick enough to harbor some anaerobic denitrifying bacteria. So, given a low water flow rate of course... it's likely that we can use them to evacuate nitrates in the form of nitrogen gas! This may help a little, especially in recifal applications, but it's no match for real live rocks or Aquaroches! In other words, for just a few euros, in addition to a sturdy plastic zippered net (stainless steel) supplied as a bonus in the package, we end up with very good quality fried glass noodles capable of excellent biological filtration while having the same mechanical filtration effects. Of course, as with any serious bacterial support, and in order not to disturb the bactoches, they should never be rinsed in tap water, but only in the bucket of water just removed from the tank for the water change!
